It appears that Kim and I are absolutely insane. But we think it sounds like a lot of fun, and we don't do enough crazy fun stuff. What exactly is the insanity in question?

JoCo Cruise Crazy is a 6-day Eastern Caribbean cruise on Holland America’s ms Eurodam, with music and comedy performances from Jonathan Coulton and friends, featuring John Hodgman, Wil Wheaton, Paul and Storm, Bill Corbett & Kevin Murphy from Rifftrax, Molly Lewis, and Mike Phirman. It departs from Ft. Lauderdale, FL on January 2, 2011 and returns January 8, with ports of call at Half Moon Cay, Bahamas; Falmouth, Jamaica; and Georgetown, Cayman Islands.

We figure, worst case, we get a decent-sounding cruise on a pretty nice cruise line with a particularly nifty entertainment package. Not bad at all. (Holland America doesn't have a "party cruise" culture, which is just fine with us... though it does mean that the passengers tend to be on the older end.) Best case, we get a week-long geek-con/w00tstock experience with a bunch of awesome people kinda like us who are actually fun to get to know and hang out with.

We're hoping for "best case". Anyone want to join us?

And we should be in that first 250 people who get to go to the cocktail reception with JoCo and friends. (At least I assume so since there hasn't been the promised warning about it getting close to 250 yet.)

I don't know that we'll spring for the pricey internet service on the ship, but we'll make a point of taking pictures and (with luck) making some notes on cool stuff to share. (Maybe we can post updates with an exactly one-week delay. :) Except that we'll be teaching at that point, of course.)

I...am startled that a cruise pitched to this audience does not have free wifi. But I suppose it is an obvious way for them to make more money.

I love this part of the FAQ:

Really? You’re saying that an entire cruise, PLUS several island paradise destinations, PLUS star-addled entertainment, PLUS special activities aren’t enough for you? What kind of person ARE you, anyway?

And we are too. So of COURSE there will be internet access, in the form of WiFi that’s available in virtually every cabin and most public spaces throughout the ship.

The bad news is it’s not free, but we are able to offer a 10% discount on prepaid WiFi access through InSight Cruises (details on how to purchase TBA):

* 250-minute cards at $90 per card ($0.37 per minute) + $3.95 credit-card processing fee
* 500-minute cards at $140 per card ($0.28 per minute) + $3.95 credit-card processing fee

If either of your phones do texts/SMS and get service at the ports, you can twitter. :) (Though, depending on your plan, watch out for roaming charges.)

Jealous! We are not really feeling the necessary cash-flow right now. But have tons of fun!

Yeah, I expect roaming charges would be awful. We'll just do a brain dump when we get back :-)

Thankfully, I'm going to be teaching 5 or 6 classes this year and the total cost should be ~1 class's take-home pay. If I didn't have the very regular part-time pay coming in during the school year, then we'd just be wistfully sighing at the cruise. We are staying in an interior room, so hopefully we won't regret that cost-saving measure (although we did at least splurge on a large one to avoid claustrophobia).
