I wrote a letter of recommendation for a student today, but an old PDF viewer bug inspired the printer to reinterpret what I'd written a little:

One person that I showed this to commented, "It could have been worse: that student could have ended up with a '??? ???? ?? ?????...' letter."

I once had a dying printer turn one of my documents into something resembling dadaist poetry. I think I've still got it lying around somewhere...

I showed it to one of the other physics professors here, and he said, "Yeah, I've seen a few letters of recommendation that looked like that: 'He walks on water! He's the greatest ever!'"

That is awesome. Really, what more could you hope for in a recommendation letter. Please tell us you sent it that way. :)

There's a part of me that would love to send a letter like that sometime, just to give someone on the other end a more surreal day. But alas, I'm a bit too aware of how much my students depend on me not toying with their hopes and dreams.

I'll reserve that sort of thing for my kids.
