At lunch today, one of my colleagues posed an intriguing puzzle. You are lost in a desert, and you have to choose one of three items to help you get out alive: an egg, a banana, or a can of beer. What do you choose?

(If there's interest, I'll provide his answer in the comments.)

On the theory that I think someone will be looking for me, I'd go for the can of beer. Use the reflective surface to attract attention of the search planes, or create a solar still and use it to catch the water drops.

Of course I'm intersted in his answer too.

same answer, same 2 reasons.

I think I have to agree with Beth. The beer can will make a nice reflector and I can use it as a collector for dew later. The beer itself might not be such a good idea for the desert, but I could always soak blistered feet in it.

At our lunch, after we had discussed the puzzle for a bit we turned to Sidi and asked, "So what's the right answer?" He looked almost confused, and then he said, "Oh, I don't know, I just made it up."

We still have no idea whether he's actually intending to be funny a lot of the time, but he sure comes up with a lot of entertainingly random stuff. (In this case, I'd put my money on "no". But still, an egg, a banana, and a can of beer? Where the heck did that come from?)
