Last night, Kim and I went to the wedding of our friends Janie and Bill here in Alma. It was a simple ceremony, with some neat readings and lots of grinning by both of them. (The line "You may kiss your groom" was a nice touch at the end.) The reception featured a live band fronted by one of the couple's good friends who does a fantastic Axl Rose impression (the groom sang with them a fair bit, too). It also featured karaoke, and with a bunch of their other friends Kim and I had contributed some songs to the available collection.

I haven't done karaoke much and I'm not nearly good enough to want to sing more than my share, so I only went up to the mike three times. I started with Code Monkey, and I must have done a halfway decent job of it because at the end of the night someone tracked me down and asked me about the original. (As a fairly recent fan myself I was happy to introduce someone new to Jonathan Coulton.) A bit later, I sang New York City by They Might Be Giants. That was tricky to arrange: there isn't a karaoke version of that available commercially so I had to make my own, which wasn't trivial. (Thank you so much for Audacity, [livejournal.com profile] minorninth! And also to the makers of TunePrompter.)

Finally, once it got late enough that most of the little kids had gone away (or at least gotten less attentive), Kim and I went up together and sang First of May. The response was surprisingly minimal: JoCo says on his website, "don’t blame me if you get punched in the mouth for singing First of May", but I think it was late enough that people didn't entirely tune in to what sounded like a laid-back folk song. So much for scandalizing a bunch of our co-workers.

All in all, it was a fun night. I should probably agree to do that sort of thing more often. (It really helped that I had music choices that I knew and liked, of course.)
